Ashes of 2020
Metal urn with paper-ash
For URNS of 2020 exhibition, with Ionica Italy at Gaffa Gallery December 2020.

My urn focuses on preservation and continuation. Isolation has been a time of introspection as 2020 has brought with it many hardships, emotional events and communal struggles. I asked my community to recall an aspect of 2020 which they would like to preserve or take forward. Offering a relational artwork involving pausing, reflection and intention setting, participants wrote down their chosen memory (a sentence, word, moment, attitude, lesson, feeling or story), and then read it aloud. Their words were then placed inside the urn to be burnt - a process preserving their words as ash, used to coat the urn.

All the proceeds of this artwork in the auction went to the Fire and Flood Resilience initiative of the Minderoo Foundation.

This work was the recipient of the People's Choice award and received third prize at the URNS of 2020 exhibition in December 2020.
