The Body as a Vessel (2020)
Hot poured glass over plaster cast forms.

To me, the word vessel carries with it connotations of the body, as a container of physical and non-physical matter, and as the vehicle of transportation of these things: our bodily organs, transient breath and inner mind and soul. The body contains our physical and metaphysical selves. Our bodies are also contained physically and metaphorically within our environments.

I wanted to create glass forms that fit my body. These forms can be seen to be either moulded to the wearer as both an extension of my body or a vessel for my body to fit into. Exploring a relationship between glass and skin, inside and outside, the forms fit onto my body and in turn, my body fits into each form. My body is a vessel itself and is contained within the glass works.

My body has left an imprint in the glass forms which take on the role of an outer skin, emphasising the negative spaces of my body and holding it stagnant. I was interested in joints of the wrist, elbow, knee and ankle. Our joints enable movement, and the restriction of our joints contains this movement. The bent elbow and knee particularly capture and contain a folded form.
